When Michael Jackson said, “Don’t stop till you get enough.” he really meant that because the fact that this movie is still going as strong as it is. That’s just proof to me that obviously, he ain’t had enough yet because this movie is still breaking records and claiming multiple number one spot. Michael Jackson has officially smashed a record that seemed untouchable.
His biopic passed Oppenheimer’s all-time box office total. That number was $977 million for Oppenheimer. Michael blew right past it. But, that’s not all. Some entertainment trackers claim Michael has already crossed $1 billion worldwide. Comic Basics reported the film crossed that mark thanks to a strong Japanese opening weekend.

Other outlets, including reports as recent as July 1st, still had it sitting closer to 990 million. So, why the gap? It’s because international numbers often lag behind by several days before official aggregators catch up. That means the billion-dollar claim might already be true even if some trackers haven’t updated yet.
One thing is certain though, Oppenheimer’s record is gone and Michael owns it now. Nobody predicted this. Not the studio, not the analysts, not even the people who spent years making it. When the tracking numbers first came out for the Michael Jackson biopic, Hollywood insiders were quietly hoping for around 50 to 60 million dollars on opening weekend.
A safe, respectable number for a music biography. And then the actual weekend arrived. It seems that audiences’ reviews mean more than critics’ reviews because over the weekend the Michael Jackson movie made $217.4 million. Wow. Which means opening weekend That’s like the biggest opening weekend for a biopic like that ever.

Which means it’s very successful. $97 million domestically, $217 million worldwide in a single weekend. A number so large it didn’t just beat other music biopics, it erased them. And that was only the beginning. For years, nobody knew if this movie would actually work, and every casting update just sparked more debate about whether anyone could pull off Michael Jackson.
Critics doubted people still cared about music biopics, and Jackson’s skipped over controversies threatened to turn fans away before opening weekend. Then, a legal issue forced a major rewrite and pushed the release back almost a year, the kind of delay that usually kills a movie. Instead, Lionsgate spent $60 million on flash mobs, holograms, and marching bands around the world.
They weren’t just selling a movie, they were selling an experience. When the movie finally opened, cinemas didn’t just fill up, they erupted. People weren’t sitting quietly in the dark. They were reacting out loud, clapping during performances, and coming back a second time with friends, and sharing clips on social media within hours of leaving the theater.

With a $97 million domestic opening, Michael didn’t just set a new record for music biopics. It became the biggest opening weekend of any biopic in Hollywood history, passing Bohemian Rhapsody’s 51 million, nearly doubling it, and surpassing Straight Outta Compton’s domestic record of 60 million by more than 50%.
Even Oppenheimer, backed by enormous prestige and awards momentum, was left behind. It is now official, the Michael movie has now become the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time, beating Bohemian Rhapsody in under 2 months. As it stands, Michael has made 911.9 million worldwide, while Bohemian Rhapsody had 911 million worldwide, as well.
And we’re not stopping there, cuz Japan’s projected to make 8.5 million dollars this weekend for Michael, eyeing a 55 to 60 million dollar run, which would make it, of course, like 970 million by that point without the actual other countries involved as well. The amount of money this movie has made under 2 months is ridiculous considering that it’s literally the summer.
And the competition, absolutely crushed. Films that have been running for weeks were lapped in a single weekend. Scream 7 had spent months building a 213 million dollar global total. Michael passed that number in its first weekend. Desert Warrior, a film that spent 5 years in production, opened the same weekend and made 475,000 dollars total. The damage was historic.
At the center of all this was Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s real-life nephew. Before filming began, the question wasn’t whether he could handle the pressure. The question was whether anyone could. Carrying a production of this scale, one where every audience member already has emotional memories attached to the subject, is a challenge unlike almost anything else in Hollywood. There is nowhere to hide.
I was so self-conscious at first. It took honestly a few years until I really felt confident. And then day one on the set, that’s when I was okay, finally. Yeah, it clicked. I can finally let it out. But the process leading up to it was really challenging and and a lot of doubt in moments, but I always told myself to look at the long-term goal.
As weeks passed, the milestones kept arriving. So, this is it. Says Michael has surpassed the total box office of American Sniper and has become the second highest grossing bio film in US history. And it shows Michael at 362 million and American Sniper at 350 million. How in the actual is he doing this? I don’t think you guys understand how crazy this stat actually is.
Because before I tell you what movie is number one domestically, this will blow your mind. American Sniper was in theaters for six goddamn months. And the Michael Jackson movie broke that record like 2 weeks ago. This is where it genuinely gets crazy. But sitting in first place is The Passion of the Christ at over 370 million.

I mean, when people said that it goes number one, Jesus Christ, and number two, Michael Jackson, in terms of fame, I really didn’t think they were going to take that comparison to the box office. Sorry, Bo Rap. The King has taken over. Michael hit $912 million worldwide today, making it the biggest grossing musical biopic of all time.
All it needs to do is beat Oppenheimer to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time. It’s already Lionsgate’s biggest movie of all time, and we just need a little more time to hit that billion. Michael became the highest-grossing Lionsgate release of all time, surpassing The Hunger Games and Twilight franchises.
It also became the biggest film in director Antoine Fuqua’s career. And now, after strong performances across international markets, including Russia, Japan, and South Korea, the film has climbed to around $970 million worldwide, extending its lead as the highest-grossing music biopic in history. We did it. The Michael movie is officially the highest-grossing music biopic of all time, dethroning Bohemian Rhapsody.
I mean, we knew that was going to happen, but Bohemian Rhapsody brought in $911 million, and the Michael movie just broke $911.9 million worldwide. And with the Michael movie opening today in Japan, it is very likely that it’ll be the second film of 2026 to pass the $1 billion threshold, following the Super Mario Galaxy movie. Show me any other artist breaking this many records from the afterlife.
That record had stood for years. Industry analysts had widely considered Bohemian Rhapsody an unrepeatable outlier, a perfect storm of nostalgia and global music recognition. Michael not only matched it, it passed it. The gap between these two films and everything else in the genre tells the full story.

Elvis earned around 288 million. Straight Outta Compton landed near 200 million. Only two music biopics in history have ever crossed 300 million globally with ease. Now, one of them is approaching a billion. This past Friday, on June 12th, the Michael movie debuted in Japan. And not only did it become the number one movie in Japan, it made 2.
3 million dollars on its first day. And that’s actually more than double of what Bohemian Rhapsody made its first day in Japan. Japan has historically been one of Michael Jackson’s strongest fan bases worldwide. His concerts there drew enormous crowds. His music has remained popular across generations. When the film opened in Japan, early reports indicated one of the biggest first Saturdays for a Hollywood release in the post-pandemic era.
Those expectations proved accurate. Japan delivered another strong box office performance. And with Michael opening up in Japan this past weekend, it made over 6.3 million dollars, doubling what Bohemian Rhapsody made on its opening weekend in Japan. And now it’s being projected that Michael’s going to make about 50 to 60 million dollars in its total box office run.
And that means Michael will be surpassing Oppenheimer as the highest-grossing biopic of all time. Now, those international numbers have started coming in. Strong collections from Japan, Russia, and South Korea have significantly boosted the film’s global total, helping Michael to surpass Oppenheimer to become the highest-grossing biopic ever made.
Another major box office milestone has fallen, further cementing the film’s place in Hollywood history. If this is even a somewhat good film about Michael Jackson, I think it could hit a billion. Cuz closest we’ve had is Oppenheimer. Um that grossed almost a billion around 973 million. Several trackers are reporting that Michael has quietly crossed the $1 billion mark.
A strong Japan opening reportedly pushed it past the threshold, even though some major outlets haven’t updated their totals yet. That gap happens because international numbers often take a few days to catch up with official aggregators. If true, Michael just became the first biopic in history to hit a billion dollars worldwide. Streaming could still slow things down from here, since a premium home option might pull repeat theatrical viewers off their second or third trip to the cinema, and piracy usually creeps up once that access opens.
